Those of us that earned our college and graduate degrees in the 1970s and 1980s spent a lot of time at the library scanning through sheets of microfiche. It was much more compact to store documents in microfiche form. Not as easy to hold and read through as a paper copy, but easier to store.

Below is an example of what can be done with those old microfiche sheets. We scanned a sheet and a few mouse clicks later, we had

converted an image that was actually smaller than the first joint of your pinky into something that was very legible and can be printed or stored offsite.

The image on the left is the actual image color, and the one on the right had the colors inversed to help with readability.
