Digitizing Microfilm Images
Scanning and converting microfilm images

Every library, government office, and many private companies have an archive room. Somewhere in the archive room are drawers containing reels of microfilm. This was a great way to archive documents back in the day - it was the most practical way of storing hundreds or thousands of pages of information in a compact form. Many of us have spent hours in front of a microfilm reader scanning through documents in search of needed information.

CSRA Multimedia can take those rolls of microfilm and convert them into digital images. Now the images are preserved permanently in their present state; no further degradation with time will occur. Also, having the images in digital form allow them to be remotely backed up to ensure data survival. Finally, the digital images can now be reused and repurposed in a myriad of ways.

The image shown below is a section of a building permit that was microfilmed back in 1986. We scanned it at 2,400 ppi to demonstrate to the Permitting Department that we could convert their drawer full of microfilms into useable and readable images
that could be stored remotely on a server. Unfortunately, budget restriction prohibited us from moving forward on this project. They had a total of 4,200 images on microfilm reels. It’s still cool to look at the quality of an image that was about 1”X1” on film being this readable.

You have two basic choices for converting this material into digital form. You could have one of your staff do it.

Question - are you sure they know the best methods for scanning images? What about the scanning resolution? Color depth? WIll these digital images represent the tonality of the images correctly? If we haven't left you in a fog of technical jargon yet, we salute you!

The second, and we feel the better choice is to contact CSRA Multimedia and let us convert your archives of microfilm into crisp, clean, digital images that will be ready for use for years to come.
